10 Ways Parents and Kids Can Make the School Bus Even Safer

Here at Rohrer Bus, we’re proud to say that we provide our kids with the safest form of transportation on the road! (For more information on this, see this blog post from a couple weeks ago) With this being said, the vast majority of injuries on or around school buses are caused by human error, rather than fault of the bus. Kids are already 70 times more likely to arrive to school safely when riding on the bus rather than a standard car, and these odds can increase further if parents and kids follow these simple rules:

  1. Parents and kids should plan to be at the bus stop 5 minutes early to ensure that nobody’s rushing around.
  2. Make sure that a parent waits at the bus stop every day, especially if the kids are under 10 years old.
  3. In the afternoon, parents should wait on the same side of the street that kids will be dropped off on, so the kids won’t have to cross the road alone.
  4. Parents and kids should stay on the sidewalk or otherwise off the street when waiting for the bus, and stay aware of other traffic.
  5. Kids should wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching it to board or standing up to walk off.
  6. Kids should be careful when walking around the outside of the bus; they should not walk behind the bus, and they should always stay at least 5 big steps from the sides and front so the driver can see them at all times.
  7. Kids should always stay in their seats, and they should keep their feet, bags, and belongings out of the aisle.
  8. Kids are encouraged to talk and laugh with their friends, but should not yell or scream as to not distract the driver.
  9. Kids should always listen to their driver, as drivers know what’s best for keeping all of their passengers safe.
  10. Parents should review these safety rules with their kids, and encourage them to always respect their driver!

Thanks for reading, and be sure to practice safe school bus habits in the future!
