What Do School Vehicle Drivers Do In the Summertime?

Millions of students get transported to school every day across the nation, but what happens to all of the drivers once those students are out of school for summer break? Depending on the individual driver, there are endless possible answers. Keep reading to find out what a lot of Rohrer Bus drivers do during the summer months!

Complete their training and licensing!

This point applies more to bus-drivers-in-training, but a lot of people use the summer months to focus on learning everything they need to know to be a school bus driver. After all, it’s the best time of year to complete training, because what could be better than starting fresh a new school year, just as the students do?

Spend time with their kids!

A lot of our drivers start out as parents with preschool age children that they can take on the school bus with them. As these drivers stick with us and their kids get older, they may not get to spend the middle of their days with their children, but they always get to spend summers with them! Our drivers say that getting to spend the summers with their children is one of the number one perks of the job.

Go on vacation!

Some of our drivers don’t have school age children, but that doesn’t mean they don’t take advantage of the summer months! Lots of drivers love to fit as many fun outdoor activities as they can into the warm months they have off. Many even plan extended stays away, to the beach for example, because they don’t have job conflicts!

Drive the Hershey Shuttle!

Some of our drivers prefer to keep working during the summer, so even though they don’t have their regular school bus runs, they can drive the Hershey Shuttle! Rohrer Bus contracts not only with school districts, but with the Hershey company as well, so our drivers get to transport Hershey patrons between the Lodge, the Hotel, the Park, and so on. Our drivers especially like driving the Hershey Shuttle buses because they’re nicely air conditioned!

Drive for parks and recreation activities!

We offer extra work, besides the Hershey Shuttle, to those who would like to serve the local towns and communities. We often contract through local towns’ Parks and Recreation departments, especially in the summer, so our drivers get to transport kids for all kinds of fun trips!

Compete in School Bus Safety Competitions!

Some of our drivers like to maintain their top-notch skills during the summer and show off their knowledge by participating in School Bus Safety Competitions! Speaking of which, eight of our drivers are taking part in the Pennsylvania State Competition coming up soon, so best of luck to them!
